Schools and kura in New Zealand must be smokefree and vapefree, inside and out. Vape Guardian helps them, and local workplaces, detect vaping in toilets and changing rooms, alerting staff in about 5 seconds.
The 2025 ASH Year 10 Snapshot of more than 31,000 students found daily vaping fell to 7.1% (from 8.7% in 2024) and regular vaping to 11.2%, but rates were far higher for some groups, including 16.5% daily vaping among Māori students (ASH NZ). Here is how our system supports principals and school boards.

Vaping Rules in New Zealand
Under the Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Act 1990, schools, kura and early learning centres must be smokefree and vapefree at all times (HealthEd). Since 21 September 2023, new specialist vape shops cannot open within 300 metres of a school or marae, and vape flavour names are limited to generic terms. Since 18 December 2024, the fine for selling vapes to under-18s has risen to up to $100,000 for a company, and since 17 June 2025 disposable vapes have been banned, with fines of up to $400,000 (Ministry of Health).
