British travellers warned of jail time and fines due to vape ban this summer

British vacationers are being cautioned about a significant mistake that might result in steep punishment or worse while traveling to well-known South East Asian locations. Travelers who vape are advised to confirm restrictions and local laws before their trip. This advisory comes as several countries in Asia and Oceania have stringent anti-vaping legislation, which could result in severe penalties for violators.

Understanding the Anti-Vaping Laws

Travelers visiting South East Asia will encounter some of the strictest anti-vaping laws in the world. Singapore and Thailand, in particular, have harsh penalties for those caught with e-cigarettes. In Thailand, vaping has been illegal since 2014, and careless visitors risk a fine of up to 30,000 baht (approximately £650) or a 10-year prison sentence. Similarly, in Singapore, possessing an e-cigarette can result in a punishment of up to $2,000 (about £1,200).

According to the Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA), e-cigarettes and vaping devices are illegal in five out of the ten nations in the region. This highlights the importance of being aware of local laws to avoid any legal trouble during your vacation.

Countries with E-Cigarette Bans as of July 2024

Several countries outside of South East Asia also have strict bans on e-cigarettes. As of July 2024, the following countries have made it illegal to possess, sell, import, or export electronic cigarettes:

  • Hong Kong: Illegal to possess e-cigarettes “for commercial purposes.”
  • Mexico: Sale, import, or export of electronic cigarettes is forbidden.
  • Taiwan: Complete ban on e-cigarettes.
  • Argentina: Import, export, or sale of electronic cigarettes is forbidden.
  • India: Import, export, or sale of electronic cigarettes is forbidden.
  • Brunei: Sale, import, or export of e-cigarettes is prohibited.
  • Panama: Sale, import, or export of electronic cigarettes is illegal.
  • Brazil: Import, export, or sale of electronic cigarettes is forbidden.
  • Suriname: Sale, import, or export of electronic cigarettes is illegal.
  • Nicaragua: Sale, import, or export of electronic cigarettes is illegal.
  • Seychelles: Sale, import, or export of electronic cigarettes is illegal.
  • Uruguay: Sale, import, or export of electronic cigarettes is illegal.

Potential Consequences of Vaping in Prohibited Countries

Travelers caught with vaping devices in countries where they are prohibited can face severe consequences. At security checkpoints, your vape may be seized, and in the worst-case scenario, you could face hefty fines or jail time.

For instance, in Cyprus, vaping in public places or in a private vehicle with a child under the age of eighteen is prohibited, with fines up to €850 for violators. In Italy, while vaping is permissible in Rome, it is strictly forbidden in Vatican City, with fines up to $980 for those who vape in public areas where smoking is banned.

Advice for Vapers Planning to Travel

Dan Marchant, Director of Vape Club, advises that travelers should always familiarize themselves with local laws before visiting any destination to prevent unwanted consequences. This includes understanding the country’s vaping legislation to avoid fines or worse repercussions should vaping be prohibited there. In regions where vaping is strictly regulated, the illicit vape trade has expanded, making it even more crucial for travelers to stay informed and cautious.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Research Local Laws: Before traveling, ensure you are aware of the vaping laws in your destination country.
  2. Avoid Carrying Vaping Devices: In countries with strict bans, it is best to leave your vaping devices at home.
  3. Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with any changes in legislation that may affect your travel plans.

By taking these precautions, British vacationers can enjoy their travels without the risk of facing severe penalties for vaping. Always prioritize understanding and adhering to local regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
