More and more worries about the amount of young people vaping

The Rise of Youth Vaping: A Growing Public Health Concern

Study Reveals High Vaping Rates Among Schoolchildren

A new study has raised fresh concerns about the number of young people who vape and become addicted to nicotine. Data presented to Kent County Council (KCC) found that 1 in 10 school-aged children in Kent currently smoke.

Of the 5,493 students surveyed across 33 schools562 admitted to vaping, and more than half stated they had no intention of stopping.

Vaping Seen as More Socially Acceptable

Jason Hickson from KCC highlighted that vaping is often viewed as more socially acceptable than smoking. However, growing concerns about its health effects have led to the study being presented to the Health Reform and Public Health Cabinet Committee.

Hickson revealed that one-third of daily vapers felt the urge to vape every hour, indicating a strong addiction. “That’s quite high and suggests that proportion are addicted,” he said, calling the findings “a little bit scary.”

Where Are Young People Getting Their Vapes?

The study found that most young vapers purchase their products from:

  • Corner shops (49%)
  • Vape stores (36%)

Additionally, 52% of young vapers reported seeing vaping products promoted on TikTok.

The Health Risks of Vaping

While some public health officials acknowledge that vaping can help people quit smoking, they caution that e-cigarettes still contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance.

Dr. Julian Spinks, a doctor in Rochester, warned that little is known about the long-term effects of vape ingredients like moisture and glycerol, especially on young bodies.

In the short term, vaping can cause:

  • Sneezing
  • Dizziness
  • Sore throats
  • Headaches
  • Rapid heartbeats
  • Dental damage

Young Bodies, Bigger Risks

Dr. Spinks highlighted that some vapes contain more nicotine than cigarettes, making them even more addictive. “We don’t want young people getting hooked on it,” he said.

As young bodies are still developing, the effects of nicotine could be even more severe. Nicotine is not a harmless drug; in fact, it is used as a natural pesticide in plants.

The Upcoming Ban on Disposable Vapes

Starting June 2024, single-use vapes will be banned in the UK. Authorities hope this will curb youth vaping rates.

To measure the impact of this ban, another survey will be conducted in 2026 to compare vaping trends among young people.

Time for Action

The findings of this study highlight an urgent need for stronger regulations and increased public awareness. With youth vaping rates on the rise, the long-term consequences could be severe.

As more research emerges, one question remains: Are we underestimating the dangers of vaping, just like we did with cigarettes in the past?
