Liverpool Hospital creates a vaping clinic to treat kids as young as 11.

A Groundbreaking Initiative at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital

A pioneering vaping cessation clinic has officially opened at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, targeting young people aged 11 to 16. Established in November, this clinic aims to tackle the alarming rise in youth vaping across the UK. The Alder Hey NHS Foundation Trust announced that the clinic will collaborate closely with patients to develop tailored solutions for each individual’s needs.

The youth vaping surge

Vapes and e-cigarettes are electronic devices that release vapour containing highly addictive nicotine. In recent years, the number of young people using these devices has skyrocketed, particularly in Liverpool and across the UK. A recent survey of 14,000 children revealed that 14% admit to vaping more than once a week—an increase from 6% in 2020.

Tobacco Down, Vaping Up

While tobacco use among children in the north-west of England has dropped to a record low of 6%, vaping-related health issues are on the rise. Reports from December indicated that more than one child per week is being admitted to hospital with vaping-related injuries. These injuries range from breathlessness to potential lung damage, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

Festive Flavours and Easy Access

Over the recent Christmas period, health officials raised concerns about festive vape flavours like mince pie, candy cane, and gingerbread, which are likely to appeal to younger audiences. Despite the legal restrictions on selling vapes to under-18s, NHS England discovered that many online stores are offering ‘Christmas deals’ with minimal to no age verification checks.

Professor Sir Stephen Powis, National Medical Director at NHS England, stated, “More than 30 children and young people have been admitted to hospital over seven months for conditions linked to vaping, such as breathlessness and potential lung damage, which is simply alarming.”

Calls for Stricter Regulations

The NHS has urged online retailers to tighten their age verification processes to prevent children from accessing these harmful products. Professor Powis added, “While vapes can be a useful tool to help adults quit smoking, they should not be used by children and under-18s. There’s nothing joyful or fun about the serious effects they can have on young people’s health and the potential long-term consequences.”

Conclusion: A Step Towards a Vape-Free Future for Young People

The opening of this clinic at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital marks a significant step towards addressing the youth vaping crisis. By providing tailored support and raising awareness about the dangers of vaping, Liverpool is leading the charge in protecting the health and well-being of its young population.
