Sniffer dog to be used at school to stop students from vaping

A secondary school said that it will utilise a sniffer dog to discourage students from bringing in vape pens.
A “passive deterrence dog” will reportedly be shown around the school one day in February, according to City of Norwich School.
According to a representative, it was one of several steps taken to counteract the “negative impact of vapes and other prohibited substances”.
In an effort to combat the rising number of young people developing the habit, the prime minister said on Monday that disposable vapes would be prohibited.
“While we do not currently have a problem with this [vaping] at the school, we are aware that this is a rising challenge within society, and therefore want to take proactive steps to help counter and deter this,” stated a representative for the Ormiston Academies Trust, which oversees City of Norwich School. The group funding this [sniffer dog] has a lot of expertise providing this service in educational settings.”
The school stated that in addition to hosting specialised assemblies and directing students who require more attention, other educational efforts are being made to discourage kids from vaping.
Although it is currently against the law to sell vapes to anybody under the age of 18 in the UK, the government claims that disposable devices—which are sometimes offered in brighter, smaller packaging than refillable ones—are a “key driver behind the alarming rise in youth vaping.”
The percentage of 11 to 17-year-olds who vape externally on a regular or infrequent basis is 7.6%, according to data from the organisation Action on Health, up from 4.1% in 2020.
The inhaled vapour contains trace amounts of chemicals, including the highly addictive drug nicotine. According to medical professionals, vaping may harm young people’s hearts, brains, and lungs over time.
Experts say further research is necessary to determine the precise health implications.
